Success Is a Direction

I’ve heard it said that “Success is a journey, not a destination…” I think there is truth in that statement, but I have a slightly different feeling. It’s my personal opinion that success is more of a direction than even a journey. I say this because most of those who feel successful of those I’ve come into contact with were happiest with the control they have over the direction of their lives. Life is a journey, but where is it going? What direction is it headed? That’s the question, in my opinion, when answered best defines success.

Think about it. Whatever is happening in your life in terms of career, wealth, relationships (love, friends or family) or health, if your life is going the way you want it to go, you’re happy. Even if you’re not where you want to be yet, you feel good about what’s happening in your life when you have determined what direction you’re going to go. Now, provided you take action to move on your intentions and ambitions, your life is “headed in the right direction.” That’s when one feels in alignment. That’s when you feel like you’re moving with the current of life and not against it. It feels easy and good, regardless of the current circumstance because you’re now confident that you’re making progress. So get clear on where you want your life to go. Get very clear…crystal clear. Now there’s a target you have a good chance at hitting, yes? So go get it. Bye for now…

This is an excellent post, Donovan. I'd like to dig in deeper here with you since I've always enjoyed my conversations with you.

I agree wholeheartedly with you that success is a direction. However, once you've decided which direction you'd like to go, you need to plan for it. Once you've outlined your road map, you'd need to be responsible for all the decisions you make and all the actions you take.

Often times, which I find sad, is people can talk a pretty talk and paint a stunning mental picture of where they'd like to go, and that's all they do---daydreaming. Nothing concrete is being done. They keep being late at work, dragging along, not being responsible for their actions, and not making a change if they're unhappy with the way things are going. This is when people fail even though they talked about having a goal and how great their lives will be once they get there.

All the successful people can tell you their 3, 5, and 10-year plans. Additionally, at any given time, they can tell you the phase they are in right now according to their plans. This is how successful people measure their progress and how closely they are to achieving their goals.

Of course, once they've reached their near future goals, they're already drawing up goals for the next 3, 5, and 10 years. It is a never ending journey, and this is how we can constantly better ourselves and heighten our thinking.

As you and I discussed before, some people are very nearsighted. They cannot look into the future and would just patch things up as they go along. This creates a shallow foundation that falls apart easily. Unless they learn to see the big picture, understand the consequences of their actions, and start being responsible for everything that they say and do, they will live their lives like a hamster running around in the same wheel. They may look busy, but they ain't going nowhere.

Just my two cents (or twenty dollars with all this writing. LOL!).

Keep it coming!
